According to the requirements of the SOLAS-74 Convention (Chapter IX / 6) and the ISM Code (clause 13.5), the vessel’s Class Society acting as a Recognized Organization of the Flag Administration must periodically check the running of the Safety Management System (SMS) in the Company and on board the vessel.
“Auditing” is a type of inspection. Whereas the term “Survey” refers primarily to inspections of a TECHNICAL nature, then the term “AUDIT” refers to inspections of ORGANIZATIONAL procedures.
A SMS audit is a way to verify that the Safety Management System operating in the Company meets the requirements of the ISM Code and is able to ensure the achievement of the set goals.
